Now More Than Ever

Recent events clearly indicate a global trend towards xenophobia and isolationism. Our challenge in these difficult times is to re-assert our vision of a diverse community and to facilitate approaches for us to learn about one another.

The arts, (dance, music and literature) are often the first and most powerful way of connecting people together, because these endeavors appeal to the heart.

Iranian-American author Reza Aslan said it in this way, "It is only through the arts that we will ever understand one another."

We need you to help us strengthen and grow a community based on acceptance and mutual respect. Dance is an important way to ground ourselves in our traditions, tell our unique stories, and celebrate the myriad cultures that make us who we are as a nation.

" The Māhea Uchiyama Center for International Dance demonstrates that it is possible to create a dance space where everyone is welcome, truly everyone, regardless of gender/sexuality, ethnicity, religion (or lack thereof!), age, ability, nationality and all of that. Going to MUCID every week for the past two years has changed me. It has restored my faith in people, rekindled my love of dance, and opened my eyes to new ways of looking at and seeing and understanding the world. And all that through going to a dance class! "

~Valerie Hitivai Larsen, Tahitian Dance Student

We believe that the performing arts matter not just because beauty lifts the spirit, but also because interpersonal connection through cultural dance and music enhances our respect for diversity. Arts education also offers creative ways of solving difficult problems, a skill much needed in todayʻs world.

Please support our efforts to ground our community in understanding and respect for one another. Our goal is to raise $20,000 in our 2016 Year-End Fundraising Campaign to support the work of the Māhea Uchiyama Center for International Dance.

Individuals who donate at or above the $100 level will be our guests for a VIP Reception in our studio on January 8th at 5:00PM.
